The bittersweet end of summer is a little less sad because of the spectacular show the woods of maine put on each fall. Whether by hiking, or by driving up to an overlook, getting above the treeline and looking out over an autumn vista is pure tonic to the soul. When my sister visited one fall, and as we drove along the highway on an errand, she asked, "How can anyone take this for granted?" I said that we don't, but that we live within it every day. No less heart-stoppingly beautiful for surrounding us all the time for a brief, glorous moment. So brief. So beautiful. It both feeds the soul and breaks the heart every year. Like a perfect love story... The bittersweet end of summer is a little less sad because of the spectacular show the woods of maine put on each fall.
