Media: oil on birch panel w/shellac undercoat unframed

We found out, after living here for fifteen years, that there is a local stream where the alewives run every year on their way to spawn. We took several walks in the hope of seeing them. Finally, we arrived to find them working their way upstream through deep pools and shallow ledges. Our grand-puppy was excited to see his first fish. No damage was done to alewives as we watched in awe their perserverence. They struggled up the shallow rapids, often swept back down to the pool below. Again and again they tried.
