Snow on the beach. It wasn't something I thought about before moving to Maine. Beaches were places for summer fun, with umbrellas to shield from the sun and swimming when the water was warm enough. But winter brings out a whole new side of beaches. The surf can be wild, and the wind fierce. Snow can pile up on the sand, swept away by the tide while leaving the higher spots untouched. Now that I've lived here for a long time, I find the winter walks on beaches to be as wonderful as those in summer. And as a bonus, sometimes one can pick up surf clams for dinner, as freezing temperatures stun them into remaining on the sand after the water recedes. We leave plenty for the birds, of course, only harvesting when there is more than they need. Gifts of the sea indeed. Snow on the beach. It wasn't something I thought about before moving to Maine.
