I love seeing laundry hung out on lines. It reminds me of my grandmother's backyard. She lived in a city, but had a beautiful postage-stamp sized yard where she hung her laundry to dry. My sister and I would "build a fort" from the sheets she hung, imagining ourselves back in the days of castles (we, of course were princesses). It was disappointing that she would not let us sleep out there, no matter how much we assured her it would be okay. I still remember the smell of clean cotton sheets, blowing in the wind and tickling our skin as it brushed across our limbs. When I saw this scene on Monhegan Island, I also thought of the years I worked in camp settings, living simply and well during summers in the National Parks. Lots of nostalgia in one glance. It made me smile. I love seeing laundry hung out on lines. It reminds me of my grandmother's backyard.
