This waterfall is in Maine, just off of the highway we took to loop up through the White Mountains and back home again. There are hundreds of places just as beautiful as this one, and many are known to locals as a place to swim or relax near water on a hot day. Nothing annoys the people who live nearby more than someone who publishes a new book telling tens of thousands of others where to find their small and quiet spots. This spot, though, is at a rest stop, and so more well known than many. You still have to know to drive to the end of the parking lot and cross the walking bridge to get down to the water. The rock to the right often has young people draped over it, taking in the sun. And it is deep enough to jump in and enjoy a brisk swim. We've always been on our way to somewhere else when we've stopped here, and so have never taken that plunge ourselves. Maybe another time. In the meantime, I can paint it, taking pleasure in the memories I have of it. This waterfall is in Maine, just off of the highway we took to loop up through the White Mountains and back home again.
