The water was so high last summer that we had to make a space for the canoe in the woods instead of pulling it up onto the sandy beach that has held it for decades. I looked out one afternoon and saw the sun backlighting the slight gap through the woods, saw the water glimmering and the reflection of sunlight off of the silver canoe. It had such a sense of waiting that I took a reference photo so I could paint it in my studio. And now, as the snow falls out my window, this canoe is metaphorically waiting for me still. Next year.
