“There is in them a softer fire than the ruby, there is the brilliant purple of the amethyst, and the sea green of the emerald - all shining together in incredible union.” - Pliny (c. AD 23 – August 25, AD 79). I don’t often find myself quoting first century philosopher/naturalists, but I found that this quote by Pliny just seems to fit this painting. He was describing the beauty of the opal but it also seems to apply to the view I had of the mountains several weeks ago.
