One of my favorite places to hike is the Tipsoo Lake Loop Trail up on Chinook Pass. It's within the bounds of Mount Rainier National Park, but free to enter and allows amazing views of the mountain from a short distance (not on the mountain by near it). The alpine meadows and wildflowers, the high mountain air and light, and the rocky cliffs and Cascade Mountain Range skyline are stunning. I had painted this scene once in pastel, but wanted to try it again and leave out more details - to capture the feel poetically. I got the light, and I ended up adding more information and realism afterall. This is one of those paintings that made my heart jump inside me as I watched it emerge on the page--partly because I love the place, and partly because the painting was working. I've linked to a very short video that shows a progression of still shots of the painting in progress to completion. Enjoy.
