I like to visit the Tipsoo Lake Trail of Chinook Pass in Mount Rainier National Park. The alpine wildflower meadows, rock outcroppings, and Cascade mountains all around are stunning. Along the loop trail, there alpine lakes, breathtaking views of Mount Rainier and foothills. I painted this in pastels using an out-of-focus reference photo for my main composition. I could easily see the overall design of lights and shadows, and foundational color notes. I used many other reference photos which I had taken on location, to inform imagery of flowers, trees, and rocks. I wanted to portray the feeling of brilliant mountain sunlight almost obliterating the scenery on the top left. Check out the demo video too. Enjoy!
