Great Uncle Pete fought in the Battle of the Bulge. I eagerly ate up his war stories, but one in particular stood out in my young mind. There was a tiny bar in a small French town run by a mysterious women who always hid the bottom of her face with a brightly colored fan. A little white dog sat on her lap and enjoyed the GI's attention. The men lined up to buy the mysterious lady a drink and hopefully talk for just a minute or two, so anxious were they to simply hear a woman's voice. She never dropped her bright fan to reveal her mouth, and in my youthful ignorance I just figured she had buck teeth or bad breath. Anyways, I wanted to memorialize that story with a painting. But being I'd rather paint a dog than a person, I made that little white dog, whose name is lost to antiquity, into 'Lady Mysteria", proprietor of that nameless little bar in that forgotten French town of an era so long ago.
