This painting was done from some reference material I gathered while hiking in the mountains. I loved the facial expression on this cow elk. They can say so much with those ears, eyes and nostrils. She was not happy that we had paused and were taking photos. I was using a telephoto lens but apparently that still was too close. I snapped some photos and then we moved on so as not to cause her any more aggravation and risk her coming closer to us.
