Painting with oil takes time. I know many artists who love the look of oil paintings, but don't have the patience to deal with the act of oil painting. It's understandable. Were it not for my own obsession with the luster and depth that only oil paintings can produce, I'd have switched to a different medium long ago. Fortunately, I'm stubborn and over the years I was either taught or discovered various techniques to help make oil painting a little less excruciating than, say, eating glass. Okay, a LOT less excruciating. Enjoyable, actually!
In this ArtByte, I will discuss such things as:
-why it's okay, and sometimes necessary, to work from photographs
-photo editing (because I'm a lazy photographer)
-designing custom color palettes
-tracing is not always synonymous with cheating
-quick drying mediums (if only they didn't stink)
-paint thin, stay sane
-dry heat - or - what living in the desert taught me about oils
I hope what I share can be of good use to you.

"This was so worth $10! I started my painting career in my 50s so shortcuts are really appreciated. Now I'm going to try photoshop, too. Thanks, Mary Rosenbaum"
"I'm still struggling with my new Photoshop Elements software, so was very happy to find out that it was possible to create a palette from the reference photo. Yay! This is SO helpful. I'm using it on a painting I'm working on now, and find that isolating the colors really helps me make better choices. Thank you, Jelaine!"
One question: do you apply black acrylic gesso for your ground (and if so any recommendations?) on top of white gessoed canvas? Or do you prepare your own canvas with black gesso only? Or do you use black oil paints (or mix a black from other oil colors) to prepare the canvas? I didn't see this info in either of your excellent tutorials and would greatly appreciate knowing more about this. Thanks!"
"This was a so helpful in terms of how to use photographs and photo shop so that decisions are made before starting the painting process. It also discussed with humor how to value your time so that you can use it wisely. Lots of visuals to explain each concept. It really pulled back the "curtain" and showed how the "sausage gets made". "Jelaine Faunce provides clear descriptions of her use of Photoshop, image transfer onto her canvas and many other elements of her process --- all with wit and humor. This is the best $10 I've spent in awhile. I eagerly await her next postings.
