Painted from a photo at Paint My Photo using the Zorn palette. The gentleman in the picture is inking some type with a brayer to pull a proof. While in college, I worked in my Dad's print shop, and we had a proof press similar to this, although much smaller. They were typically used for proofing galley type, which we rarely did since most jobs that went to the hand-fed letterpress I ran were business cards and envelopes. I did learn to hand-set foundry type of the kind that was kept in those partitioned drawers from type cabinets that are now popular with craft folks. Typically, we'd use foundry fonts for names, and my Dad would set addresses and phone numbers on the Linotype he had in the shop. At any rate, this was a subject to which I had some familiarity, although at the time I'd have had a cup of coffee and a cigarette nearby.
