“Because of My Vagina” is part of my “Fairy Earth Mothers” mixed media art series, a collection that expresses how fertility, pregnancy, and birth are not always a straight line, with encouragement for people to talk about it, and seek support. Each one is a fairy with wings, but lacking arms to hold the heart cradled to her body, representing pregnancy loss and infertility. “Because of My Vagina” is inspired by actor Jennifer Lawrence. She had a miscarriage before an intended abortion in her early 20s, and also suffered a second miscarriage where she needed to surgery to removed tissue from her uterus. She has since given birth to a son. She revealed her history of miscarriages after the overturning of Roe v. Wade. As a female actor, Jennifer Lawrence has dealt with a lot of equality, particularly in the difference in how much she is paid compared to male actors of the same caliber. She once said in an interview: It doesn’t matter how much I do. I’m still not going to get paid as much as that guy, because of my vagina?”
