I have often painted this topic, the "Flamenco Dancer" Obviously the main object in this type of painting is to capture the incredible passionate and graceful movement.... see the pencil drawing in the second image, which I actually prefer. But it's more than that. It's about 'El Duende'... a sort of spirtual stirring, a tangible emotional energy that is full of life .. Though a British citizen, I have lived all my adult life in Spain, Spanish was my main career and I ve totally integrated with the locals, so to speak. I still teach (English &) Spanish now. When one hears talk of the 'Duende', it's almost impossible to translate. You can't really explain what it is, you have to experiene it. You can perceive it if you are ever lucky enough to be present in the company of some Spanish gypsies at an authentic celebration.... A young girl, older woman, a couple ... whoever might quite spontaneously break into dance with the hypnotic clapping in perfect timing marks a unique rythmn, and of course, the Spanish Guitar. Something starts to build all on its own, growing stronger out of this energy. It is most definitely a unique experience ... Here I ve posted a drawing (which I did after the first one/watercolour) which I think actually gets closer to what the 'Duende' is. Maybe I'll try one in oils.
