This painting was inspired by a photograph I inherited from a relative’s photo album. I’ve always loved looking through old photos, the older, the better, I cherish those most of all. Over the years, I’ve somehow become the Keeper of these memories. Relatives often pass down boxes of photos and albums to me because they don’t know what to do with them, and throwing them away would feel disrespectful. So, one way or another, they find their way into my care. It’s become a kind of inheritance. Growing up Southern Baptist, I remember how the conversations after church, outside in the front were just as meaningful as the sermons themselves. I was often surrounded by elegantly dressed older women in their Sunday best, complete with matching church hats. After all, no outfit was truly complete without the hat. This painting portrays one of those women. I don’t know her name, but she bears a striking resemblance to my Aunt Mary—hence the title.
