This painting really needs to be experienced in person to be fully appreciated. A digital image on-screen can’t come close to showing the subtle shifts and nuances of colors in the actual canvas. The delicate transparency of the rainbow was exciting to capture, as well as the change in the color and value of the sky. The open sky beneath the rainbow displayed bright, clear color while the sky above and outside of the rainbow was darker and less saturated. These are things the camera really fails to accurately portray, and they’re easy to miss. But when experienced in person they make a huge difference. This is a studio painting based on a recent plein air study I was lucky enough to capture when Mother Nature offered me this stunning display. I never pass up an opportunity like this.
