531 Jane Addams Jane Addams was awarded the first Nobel Peace Prize to a U.S. woman. In 1889, Addams at the age of 29 yrs old co-founded the Hull House with Ellen Gates Starr. The house was dedicated to improving social conditions for immigrants and other residents of urban slums. Included services were legal aid, an employment office, childcare, midwifery, art and music classes. Addams and colleagues often lived on site. She walked streets newly populated by Greeks, Italians, Jews, Poles, and others as she sought to discover as much about them as possible to help them adapt to their new world. As the President of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, founded in 1919, Addams worked for many years to get the great powers to disarm and conclude peace agreements. Eventually, she was honored by the American government for her efforts towards peace. I cannot imagine having her vision and steadfastness to develop the Hull House at 29 years old. I plan to visit Chicago to see what is left of these buildings. A museum and two of the buildings were moved to a nearby location. 8x8 in oil on gessobord. The second painting is done on oil paper as an understudy and continuance of my work with the #zornpalette #nobelprizewinners #allaprima 531 Jane Addams Jane Addams was awarded the first Nobel Peace Prize to a U.S. woman.
