When I went on a pack trip into Oregon's Hell's Canyon, we rode sturdy horses and mules. There were also 3 mules that were laden with our gear. They all enjoyed the care and nurturing of the handlers on the days we stayed at camp. We enjoyed interacting with these strong and beautiful animals. Overnight and into the early morning, they were lightly tethered to small trees along the edge of the clearing -- holding still long enough so we could capture them in paint.
