This little mountain scape is the first one of two paintings i made on a larch viewing overnight backpacking trip a couple of days in October in North Cascades National Park. It was very cold at night but we stayed in the most wonderful bright grove of larch trees, the camp was lit up from the intense yellows. This was the view from the trail and camp, of the mountain across the way in the afternoon, and the light was already starting to move over the mountains. On this one, my favorite part is the reflected light on the shadowy peaks. You can see the suggestion of the golden larch trees down at the tree line below. They are alpine trees, so they only grow at a certain altitude level, and that’s just above the tree line on the mountain of most other trees.
