Media: Fused Glass Powder Sgraffito Drawing
Size: 12x9 in
"Fifth Avenue Place" is a freehand drawing in black glass powder on a white sheet glass substrate. I manipulate the glass powder using a business card, needles, and my fingers to create the imagery, which is then kiln-fired and melted into the sheet glass.
This is my favorite alley in downtown Pittsburgh... the juxtaposition of this particular old building and the newer, shiny glass buildings that surround it make this alley even more interesting to me. It's dirty, dark, and likely full of rats, but in the many times I've taken photos of this place, and there is always something down there that grabs my attention. A smoke break, delivery of some sort, birds hanging out, this place is connected, yet somehow closed off from the rest of the world happening right beside it. I can't stay away from it.
