Our small city has what I believe is a unique convention center. Its facade incorporates the facade of one of the city's historic department stores as well as a number of federal style homes. When it was being built, I thought the developers were crazy to do that But, the first time I walked into the center's public areas, I loved the way they combined the modern elements needed for a state of the art convention center and honored the history of the city that stretches back before the revolution. For instance, the convention facilities include meeting rooms, a luxury hotel (the lobby is part of that), restaurants and bars. And, when it was discovered that one of the historic buildings (Thaddeus Steven's home) had been part of the underground railroad, the developers created an exhibit about it so that fact would not be forgotten.
