This is a painting inspired by my great niece. She's got a great smile, and knows how to project for the camera. But for this portrait, I wanted to capture the side of her that almost never gets recorded: her more-serious, contemplative side. Fortunately, she let me photograph her in profile and went along when I asked her to look down in a thoughtful way. I really liked the photo I took, and love the way this portrait turned out after I added the deeply-toned, abstracted background that let her shine. This is a painting inspired by my great niece.
