Media: Watercolor on Strathmore 400 Series Cold Press 140 lb paper
Size: 5x3.5 in
This piece is part of a series of little sculpture birds with flower vases. There are 3 of these wire-legged sculpture birds in a set, and this tall, leggy bird looks good with the tall vase. The greens in the vase and foliage are a mix of the yellow and blue paints used for the bird. This creates visual harmony and relationship between the elements. I've been collecting little bird sculptures to use in still life paintings. I also have a fun collection of florals that my sister-in-law creates. The 2 elements together are cute and fun to draw and paint. I use models as more of a guide, I don't replicate what I see exactly - artistic license you know. I am looking for a relationship between the elements. The foliage in the vase had something of an umbrella look to it, so that is what I focused on illustrating, which also creates a circular eye movement to always come back to seeing the bird as the most important element in the painting. I've been drawing all my life and enjoy it still. I especially like how ink drawing and watercolor look together, and you can see that in this painting. My intention with this series is to create fun, happy, playful art that I hope brings smiles to those who view them. This piece is part of a series of little sculpture birds with flower vases.
