Media: pen and ink with watercolor on 140lb paper
Size: 11x8 in
We had only just moved to Cedar City, Utah, and, as I love to explore new areas. I went out to a local park called 3 Peaks Recreation Area. There are some petrified sand dunes there with interesting mound-forms, pockets that collect water, and lots of the local juniper trees growing out of cracks in the rocks. It is a pleasant, quiet place, except for the occasional ATV, with lots of sculptural rocks and trees. The air is fresh and clean. The extra benefit is that it is only 15 miles from our new home, easy to get to. I took photos this day, which was blustery and cool, and drew and painted this image in my studio-space while looking at the photos on the computer screen, where the paper wouldn't get blown away in the wind. I am always fascinated by trees growing in difficult situations, and in this scene I also enjoy the triangular shape of the sculpted sandstone grouping on top of the large mound. What you are seeing is a vertical 14' wall of rock with a 6' tree on top. Thank you for your interest in my art. P.S. Just FYI, the painted area is 11" X 8" but it will look just fine in a standard 10" X 8" mat. We had only just moved to Cedar City, Utah, and, as I love to explore new areas.
