Media: Acrylic on archival paper
Size: 8x10 in
I found these flowers at the Erie County Botanical Gardens and I took a few reference photographs to work from. I originally painted them as a watercolor and it was a disaster. I later figured out that the paper that I used wasn't made for watercolor so it buckled and the colors looked dull.
I made a second attempt but this time I used acrylics. I handled the background by simplifying it with colorful brushstrokes to eliminate the distracting foliage. I was much more satisfied with the acrylic painting than the previous watercolor attempt, and I learned that the paper that I use for watercolors has an impact upon the results.
