This painting is in homage to Jan van der Linden, architect, artist, and my maternal grandfather. When I was a little girl, I remember a painting similar to this, done by my grandfather of a island woman in a red dress with a basket on her head. She was walking to or from the local market. I don't remember many other details, though. He had painted several works from the time he spent on the island of Java when my mother was a small child.
