Back to those sunflowers. I last painted these sunflowers in a very traditional setup, rather muted colors. This time I took out to my deck in the sunlight. I wanted to concentrate more on interesting shapes. Making no shape the same as another within the painting. Shifting the pieces of colored paper underneath, moving those darn flowers in a position they would set still and directing where their shadows would fall. I ended up with a circular design. Even though I had all those petals pointing outwards to the edge of the canvas the design as a whole pulls you in and around the canvas. Next huge challenge, the design relied heavily on those shadows. And of course that sun moves and takes the shadow right along with it. I set up around noon as that I had the advantage that the sun was at it's zenith and the shadows would move slowly. Shadows were painted in first and everything else followed. All in all I'm pretty satisfied with the results. I really love the bright colors! Back to those sunflowers. I last painted these sunflowers in a very traditional setup, rather muted colors.
