Holly started popping up in my yard several years ago. A very invasive plant. Beautiful in the spring with its yellow blossoms and then deep red berries in the fall. The leaves are wicked and thorny. Harder than heck to trim and/or cut these guys out. I started working this morning thinking that standing over by the fence I'd be shielded from the wind. It didn't work. Darn wind was all over the place. I shut it down and worked on spring cleanup of my front yard for several hrs. After noon it all quieted down. I setup once again and was at least able to use the beginning of the block-in started in the morning. The shadows had moved quite a bit, maybe 90 degrees. You can see in the setup photo I simplified around the holly and in the end did not include the fence or the neighbors house. I find that more and more once I get things started I seem to rely on the scene for correct value relationships. Other than that many times I just kind of paint intuitively and the picture starts appearing. Some painters can envision the completed painting right from the start. I don't seem to be able to do that. I've done thumbnails and still when I get going the picture seems to have its own mind as to where it will go. @sheilamarieart Holly started popping up in my yard several years ago.
