Portrait Deliberate Practice Series 40/250. "QUEEN AMINA", 7" x 5", oil on Canvas Board
I saw this gracious lady on a video clip posted on Michelle Dede's Instagram page. I instantly contacted her if I could paint this lovely lady. I was happy she agreed and because there were no demands on resemblance, I was able to freely express myself with my loose brushwork and colour on this piece. I am pleased with the result. I've titled it Queen Amina, because she reminds of the legendary Queen who was the first woman to become the Sarainiya (queen) in a male-dominated society. She expanded the territory of the Hausa people of North Africa to its largest borders in history. I painted this because I really love rustic and unrefined beauty. I played with many foreign colours on her black skin to create a bit of resonance and dynamism on her skin tones and temperature. I used the inside-out technique in a sketchy manner. The oil felt a bit too soupy but I managed to work it slowly in a full Alla Prima method.
