Last week I was delighted to attend the Ingrid Derrickson workshop in Franklin, TN, at On Track Studios and sponsored by the Chestnut Group. I've long been a fan of Ingrid's work, ever since she was a student in my painting class. She came to me wanting to learn how to paint in oils, but she was already very talented and creative and knew the direction she wanted to go.... loose, fresh, colorful impressionism. That is probably what draws us to each other. I love this style and claim it for may own, but what I don't do and Ingrid does, is stay loose and fresh and impressionistic. I tend to over work my paintings and bring a lovely, loose picture into a much tighter, sharp edge, focused, realism painting. It takes courage and practice to keep a painting loose and not over work it. It also takes lots of canvases, because they all don't turn out beautifully, Or at least mine don't. It's like hitting range balls. Shank this one, miss that one, and then all of a sudden you are one with the club and the ball and the most beautiful, straight, shot carries the ball high and far and in a straight line. The sun shines and the angels sing, and you know you are meant for this game. So it is with painting. Today I painted two paintings. The first ended in the trash. There was just no way to bring it back to life. This attempt was my second. And I like it. And I'm encouraged to try again tomorrow. Practice makes perfect. Besides I love painting and I love color and I love flowers. I delight in the practice.
