Yesterday I toured the Belmont Mansion in Nashville, Tennessee, the home of Adelicia Acklen. The home was filled with amazing art, both paintings and sculptures. One thing that inspired me was the paintings were purchased in Europe by Adelicia in the mid- to late 1800s and they were fabulous. Several of them were, however, painted reproductions by apprentices. Today I've decided to study painters I admire and practice their techniques by reproducing their work with appropriate notations to give the original artist credit for the composition, color, and technique. How else would a student learn?? This painting is my interpretation of a Sorolla painting called Portrait of a Jack Russell. If I paint this again, I'll use warmer yellows.
