The red poppy was first introduced in the United States in 1921 by Anna Jarvis. She wanted to create a symbol of remembrance for those who had died fighting in World War I, and thought that the red poppy would be an appropriate choice because it was the color of blood and inspired by this World War I poem "In Flanders Fields." The United States has set aside November 11 to recognize all veterans who have served our country with courage, sacrifice, honor and dignity.
