My painting is a study of a Matilda Browne painting from 1914. I suspect it is the garden at Florence Griswold’s home in Old Lyme, CT, where Matilda and others from the Old Lyme Artists Colony would rent rooms each summer to escape the heat and stank of the city. American impressionists rebelled against the Industrial Revolution and urbanization and instead embraced nature, gardens, everything that was natural and wonderful and beautiful about America.
