"First Houseplant" When we were newlyweds, I was a senior in college and my new husband was a sophomore in medical school. We were living on love, air, and student loans...and thoroughly enjoying our wedding gift to each other: an Irish setter puppy. I frequently took her to class with me as she was (for obvious reasons) not welcome at the medical school. We had no money for extras, so we decided to grow our own houseplant with an avocado pit. We were pretty proud when that pit grew a long stem and two big leaves. We were basking in our domestic "plenty", when our beloved pup noticed the little 'tree' in our apt. She strolled over and ATE it. Boom! In a moment our houseplant was consumed and GONE. We still laugh about it, lo these many years later. We are also thankful that we did not have the wherewithal to purchase Lilies or any other plant that is toxic to pets!
